Classic basketball ads KILL me! You think your kicks are tight? Check this out.

January 12, 2010 in News & Commentary, Press and Media by HoopsJones

sickkicksWith so much money pouring into the basketball shoe market over the last ten years, we tend to forget that there was anything BEFORE signature model/performance court shoes.  This should bring you back down to earth.

The question:  could you (or Lebron for that matter) play with any of these old-school shoes?  How many more injuries would there be today, given players are dunking at 5′10″?

NBA Jam to Make a Comeback on Nintendo Wii

January 6, 2010 in NBA, News & Commentary, Press and Media, Video Games by HoopsJones

Depending on your age, this story will either mean a whole lot or absolutely nothing to you, but the classic video game NBA Jam is set to make a comeback.

Specifically, ESPN reports that NBA Jam, which was a huge hit in arcades and on consoles during the 1990s, will be announced later this month by EA Sports exclusively for the Nintendo Wii.

ESPN speculates on the awesomeness that might come with an updated Jam, writing: “Considering that ‘Jam’ was famous for including hidden characters like Bill Clinton and Will Smith, one has to wonder if EA is planning a hidden Obama character to deliver a presidential throwdown on King James.”

LeBron’s new shoes aren’t very subtle: ‘I Love New York’

January 4, 2010 in NBA, News & Commentary, Press and Media by HoopsJones

Lebron James has an affinity for New York. He wears New York branded clothes, he hangs out there, he even wore a Yankees baseball cap at an Indians playoff game. Subtle? Not so much. Meanwhile, Lebron has spent much time adamantly denying the ongoing rumors that he will be heading to the Big Apple when his contract in Cleveland expires at the end of this season.

Lebron's new shoesWell, that may be old news at this point. Today pictures were leaked of Lebron’s new signature Nike Air Max LeBron VII Hardwood Classic edition shoes, which might look like Knicks-themed shoes to those unfamiliar with Cavs history. The Cavs’ former colors were blue with the orange “Cavs” in block-letters. Lebron has worn throwback jerseys like this before, so his colors of choice were no big deal.

Lebron James' new shoe, up close and personal. The pictures, however, were less subtle, with the bold “I Love New York” on the bottom of the shoe, leaving the message in every footprint of every person who will wear this guaranteed best-selling footwear…c’mon Lebron, spit it out, would ya?

NBA Player Fined $7,500 for a Tweet

December 20, 2009 in NBA, News & Commentary, Press and Media by HoopsJones

I saw this over the weekend and couldn’t resist sharing it with you guys.  Evidently there’s a strict policy about social media in the NBA, and as part of that policy players cannot post/tweet/communicate on social media until the teams have finished their press conferences.  Sounds like a fairly petty offense to me, but it was a cool $7,500 out of pocket for Brandon Jennings (@YUNGBUCK3) of the Bucks.

<originally posted on mashable.com, original article found here>

Brandon Jennings [@YUNGBUCK3] has made headlines for his unconventional road to the NBA — after skipping college he played professional basketball in Europe before getting drafted by the Bucks in 2009 — but now he’s making headlines for his tweets.

Last weekend Jennings tweeted 15 minutes after the Bucks game against the Trailblazers ended. That’s a big no-no in the NBA, as the league’s social media policy spells out that players aren’t allowed to tweet post-game until the team has finished talking to the media. The cost for Jennings’ Twitter hiccup? A hefty $7,500.

The tweet in question is rather benign. It reads, “Back to 500. Yess!!! “500″ means where doing good. Way to Play Hard Guys.” <…more>
